Scout STEM badges with hands on circuit projects

Scouts Councils around the country are recognizing the value of hands-on projects with electricity for building confidence in STEM.  Lectrify products are designed to provide a low-cost solution that ensures successful exploration of core concepts of electricity and engineering.  Our products are designed around a philosophy of "low threshold, no ceiling" that ensures that both girls and troop leaders have successful projects that don't limit imagination or ability.

Lectrify for New STEM and Outdoor Badges

In July 2017,  Girl Scouts announced 23 new STEM and Outdoor badges for girls to explore science and engineering. Here are examples of how our kits align with a few of the new badge journeys. 

Think like an Engineer

Girls explore key concepts in electronics and engineering. These hands-on projects provide opportunities for girls to ideate, develop and prototype solutions. Along the way they test and evaluate their ideas. Projects range from LEGO engineering to Wearable Tech.

Think Like a Citizen Scientist

We recommend a sequence of projects starting with simple circuits all the way to our Sensor. Girls create their own circuit probe to collect and analyze data on conductive materials. This exercise allows girls to practice the scientific method and focuses on environmental engineering, pollution, water, recycling and food science.

Computer Science: Think Like a Programmer

CODE It is a low cost, easy to use, open-ended, introduction to programming through physical computing. It is built upon the same microprocessor as the Arduino, the ATMEGA 328. This microcontroller can be programmed using a wide variety of Arduino programming tools ranging from the basic Arduino sketch interface to visual programming environments such as mBlock or ArduBlock that follow the familiar Scratch interface. Girls can start by programming wearable computers or interactive toys. 

ROBOTICS

Aligned with STEM Journeys from Daisy through Junior and Multi-level (K-5)

Girls explore how robots move by exploring our vibrating motor projects. They use Newton's 2nd Law to explore the relationship between force and mass. The activity includes the girls designing their own robots by testing their prototypes.  Take a look at our video on how to explore engineering concepts using Shake it.

Take these badges to the next level by adding electronics. We have a variety of projects that introduce girls to STEM while making cool wearable jewelry. For younger girls, it may be better to start them off with paper clip jewelry.
