Solar Panels

Solar panels generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect, a physical phenomenon where light excites an electron to a higher energy state and that energy is collected as electricity. The purpose of this kit is not to examine how the photovoltaic effect works, but rather to explore the factors that affect the performance and function of solar panels.

Connect the solar panel to the voltmeter by clipping one alligator clip on the + and the other on the - and turning the voltmeter on. Even in low light, the solar panel should generate some electricity so if the voltmeter reads “0” then swap the clips on the + and - and remember which was which.
